The worst downtime in almost four years left millions of WordPress users puzzled recently. Almost 10.2 million blogs went offline when the popular hosting and blogging platform underwent great problems for nearly two hours. An approximate 5.5 million page views were lost due to the unwanted outage.

The WordPress founder, Matt Mullenweg offered his apologies to the users on the WordPress blog and also gave the reasons for the crash. Apparently, an unannounced change in the core router by one of the datacenter provider disturbed the network and created a situation that had not been experienced earlier and resulted in the site crashing.

Officials at WordPress are trying to find out the finer details that led to the trouble and are finding ways to recover if the problem arises again in the future. They endeavor to create a concrete plan that would not affect any other locations.

Mullenweg confirmed that there was no loss of data and the blogs also resumed normal services after the outage was over. He assured that the there were no issues with the security of the site and it had not been hacked.

In technical terms, there was a latent misconfiguration. An unplugged cable started the spanning tree protocol that began to route the private network traffic using a slower and smaller link to a public network. The response from the users was also not very extreme and some of them felt that the goodwill of the company was strong enough to last two hours of the outage.
